Writing and Technology Essay -- Writing Technology Technological Paper
Writing and Technology "The fact that we do not commonly feel the influence of writing on our thoughts shows that we have interiorized the technology of writing so deeply that without tremendous effort we cannot separate it from ourselves or even recognize its presence and influence (Ong, 317)." In this modern age of computers, disposable pens, and mechanical pencils, it is easy to forget that at one time writing was not so simple or convenient. Most of us have ". . . become so used to composing virtual prose at a keyboard . . . (Baron 36)," that the thought of writing anything out by hand with a pencil, or any other implement, would not even cross our minds. The experience of trying to invent my own writing implements has given me a better appreciation for those who came before and the steps that brought us from hammer and chisel to keyboard and monitor. I began my search for writing implements by heading to my apartment complex's "wilderness area," also known as the dog-walk. My first idea was to find some flowers. I figured I could smear them onto a rock or piece of wood like a kind of paint. Flowers being in short supply around my complex however, forced me to look elsewhere. I did find a shrub with some berries so I tried to use those instead. I got a handful of berries, found a rock and got to work. The berry idea proved to be very impractical. It was extremely messy. My hands became gross and sticky and the words I wrote looked like nothing more than a bunch of unintelligible smudges. Another problem with this idea was that any rock with a surface big enough to write on was too heavy to move anywhere. It is not an impossibility that some of the first writing was recorded on large rocks or cave walls in this wa... ...rmation for posterity. Why spend many painful hours carving away when you can just have an oral tradition? It is the business world and man's desire for monetary gain that has been the driving force behind the development of writing technology. Thank you business world! It has been great typing this paper on the computer. I don't want to think about how long it would have taken me to etch this entire thing onto my branch. Works Cited Baron, Denis. Rayonaââ¬â¢s Growth in A Yellow Raft In Blue Water Essay -- Yellow Raft Bl
Rayonaââ¬â¢s Growth in A Yellow Raft In Blue Water à à à As the subject of the first section of Doris' novel, A Yellow Raft In Blue Water, Rayona faces many problems that are unique to someone her age. Ray's mixed race heritage makes her a target of discrimination on the reservation. Problems in her family life (or lack thereof), give Rayona a reversed role in which she is the mother taking care of Christine. In dealing with these issues, Rayona learns a lot about herself and others. à Because of the life that Christine leads, the role of mother and daughter are switched and Rayona often finds herself watching out for her mom. When Ray comes home from school, she would often learn that her mother had gone out to party. Times like this meant that Rayona had to care for herself. It is not uncommon for one to stay out late; but when it is the parent who is doing so, one must question the responsibility of the person. When Christine leaves the hospital, Rayona shows up and helps prevent a potential disaster. She realizes what her mother plans to do, and that her mom will not crash the car with her on board. While Christine is not very reliable, she has no wish to hurt Rayona either; Ray's prediction was correct. As a child, Rayona must fulfill more obligations than a normal teen. Over the time that leads to her abandonment, Rayona begins to feel displaced from her mother. Christine's increasing self concern causes Rayona to feel her mom is ignoring her, when that is no t true at all. à In any given culture, people are proud of their heritage. However, when an individual of one group meets with people of another, and the element of ignorance is added, the individual will be socially ostracized. Of mixed descent, Rayon... ...lways easy to accomplish. After getting bucked off for the first time then the second, Ray feels that she has "a connection to a power that she never knew existed (120)." This event enormously boosts Rayona's self-perception and leads her forward in life. à As a teen, Rayona is in a confusing period of life. The gradual breakdown of her family life places an addition burden on her conscience. Without others for support, Rayona must find a way to handle her hardships. At first, she attempts to avoid these obstacles in her life, by lying, and by not voicing her opinions. Though when confronting them, she learns to feel better about herself and to understand others. à Works Cited Gleick, Elizabeth. "An Imperfect Union." Newsweek. 28 April 1997: 68-69. Covert, Collin. Irene Hickmanââ¬â¢s Mind Probe Hypnosis
This book is about the various aspects regarding hypnosis. Hypnosis, the manipulation of the human mind by another entity is slowly going mainstream, reaching the people and making good use of it. It has been long ignored and now it becomes useful to professionals in treating various disorders of people. This book clearly show the different kinds of scenarios that you get when you explore a personââ¬â¢s mid. It also shows how to go deep into the mind in order to discover things or experiences from the past that could be hindering a person to live a normal life. Thus, it serves and benefits people by easing their mind, body and emotions. The author covers issues birth and death, problems of allergies, the use of fantasy and fact, and even treating sex problems. These issues were tackled on how the mind deals with tem, on how the subconscious mind is able to suppress these thoughts, if ever they gave the person a bad experience. This book is different from other books of the same type is that it doesnââ¬â¢t merely talk about how one should go back to the past and revisit his life before, but instead, to go back and be able to know the origin of a certain problem he is currently facing in the present time. The cases found in this book are all very useful and informative, wherein it describes their experiences with their subconscious, thus a very good guide for professionals and those who practice hypnosis. The author covers a wide scope in the aspect of hypnosis. It deals on how peopleââ¬â¢s fear could have its roots in the previous events in his life, wherein he suffered a great deal of pain or hardship which led to what he is experiencing now. Hypnosis touches on how to deal with oneââ¬â¢s fears and problems primarily from recognizing them, and acknowledging its existence. I think the most effective method of the author is the allergy-suppression dialog, wherein a person who has an allergy can be hypnotized to reminisce his past life to discover the cause of the allergy. If the cause is found, the person hypnotized will be asked to go through it over and over again until he is not feeling and discomfort or fear towards the situation they had that led to the allergy. This is a very effective way in treating patients who suffer from bodily reactions without knowing the real cause. Even if they seek medical help, the medical professionals are unable to find the real cause of the allergies. This is when hypnosis is used as a means of treatment. An example of a case where a hypnosis session was used to cure an allergy problem is with a certain Marge Tellez, who suffered an abnormal response to cold water for a long time already. Any exposure to cold water was exchanged with a rather violent reaction from her body. When she drinks cold water, the inside of her mouth would swell, and when cold water touches her, her skin would become swollen and cracked, and was really very hard and painful for her. Doctors from various medical institutions were unable to cure her, and were considered a rare case. They tried to suppress her condition by giving her a daily injection of a drug, which seem to have worked a little bit. When she resorted to hypnosis, it was found out that in her past life, she had some various bad experiences with cold water. This includes a few circumstances that she was drowned or was nearly drowned. Another situation is that she was a galleon slave and fought their captain, and the most traumatic for her was a ship wreck which claimed the life of two of her kids. With those situations in hand, the hypnotist asked her again and again to describe and talk about the situations and asks her what she feels, until they reach the point that she wasnââ¬â¢t uncomfortable with it and that she doesnââ¬â¢t feel any fear of the cold water anymore (Hickman, 2002). Another case was with a certain R.S. He complained of a severe reaction of his body to cold weather. If though he wears thick layers of clothes and jackets, he would feel uneasy and uncomfortable. It was found out, using the same method of hypnosis, that in his past life, he has been lost in a blizzard in the early years of Texas and he froze to death. Another situation that sparked his fear of the cold weather is when he died from the cold during the time of the Romans and their conquests. His past life experiences were handled by the same process, through hypnosis and recognition and confrontation of the problem itself. Through confrontation, the problem was well taken care of and he eventually lost his allergy to the cold weather. It would be a very wonderful experience if you would be able to try all the possible means in acquiring a positive result, since you would know first hand which would be really be useful for you. I think the application of these methods will depend on the situation of the patient. There are some patients who have no reaction on a certain method, and if you would use another one, you would be able to obtain a result. I would prefer the process of going back to your past self in order to cure an allergy. Because of that, it enables the patient to be free of the restrictions which are brought about by the allergy he is having. If you eliminate the root, you are enabling yourself to be able to enjoy and live your life to the fullest without worrying about any allergies. It would depend on how you approach a certain problem. I wouldnââ¬â¢t want to avoid any of the techniques because they could have potential use to them in the near future. It will be able to teach us what we need to know and how we could go about on things. As a hypnotherapyââ¬â¢s practitioner, it should be known that hypnosis is very useful in relieving a personââ¬â¢s stress. It is a key point to have an idea as to what could be the cause of a personââ¬â¢s allergy. I would personally recommend the use of the process wherein you could be able to eliminate an allergy of some sort. Summary The book was able to convey a lot important aspects regarding hypnosis and being able to probe a personââ¬â¢s mind. It is very important so that you could be relieved of a stress or overcome a certain fear of something. Through this, man is capable of living freely, without the hindrance of theses problems, wherein man is the one that creates these problems. References: Hickman, I. (2002). Dear Hiring Manager, I have enclosed my resume. I am currently enrolled in City University of New York majoring in Education concentrated in Early Childhood. I have over 5 years of experience working in an educational environment with children between the ages 2 and 5. While in Middle School, I volunteered at an after work program tutoring my peers in key curriculum courses needed to pass State Testing. Once in high school I nurtured my passion for helping others strive to be the best. I was hired at Antioch Daycare Academy as a Part Time Instructor. My experiences in the classroom and work place have taught me how to effectively assess the short and long-term goals of children, and establish mutually agreed on methods to meet their needs. Throughout my years at Antioch, I was noticed and promoted to the positioned as Directorââ¬â¢s Assistant, where I was able to strengthen my teaching and leadership abilities. The resume should never travel alone. Each time you submit your resume to an employer, you should enclose a cover letter that explains why you are submitting the resume. A cover letter is critical to creating interest in your candidacy, even for an internship or volunteer opportunity. The cover letter is your ââ¬Å"sales pitchâ⬠. It gives you the opportunity to draw an employerââ¬â¢s attention to the skills and experience outlined in your resume. You can expand on certain courses or job responsibilities that particularly match the position for which to be considered. It also gives you a chance to highlight special achievements that might otherwise go overlooked. In summarizing your qualifications, highlig ht your most appropriate skills or background in relation to a particular position without simply reiterating the information on your resume.Refer the reader to your enclosed resume for further elaboration your past accomplishments. Be direct and brief. Structure your cover letter with three sections: FIRST PARAGRAPH: This is the ââ¬Å"why I'm writing to youâ⬠paragraph which immediately tells the employer the position you want to be considered for. This is short ââ¬â usually 2-3 sentences. Points to cover: Why you are writing and which position you are applying for. ? How you heard about the position is irrelevant unless it is a mutual contact or recruiting program. Do not write, ââ¬Å"I learned of this opportunity through the Career Services Office. ? Show from your research why you are interested in this position or organization. The goal is to make a connection ââ¬â do this briefly and specifically or leave it out; sweeping statements will not work. SECOND PARAGRA PH: This is the ââ¬Å"why I'm qualifiedâ⬠paragraph. Highlight some of your most relevant experiences and qualities as they relate to the position for which you are applying. Choose 2 ââ¬â 3 points you want to make about Specific experiences/accomplishments or about general qualities you have exhibited, and provide Specific examples to support those points. This paragraph will change according to the job/employer for which you are applying. This is usually the longest paragraph of the letter. You may break this paragraph into two if it looks too lengthy or if your points work best in separate paragraphs. Points to ponder: ? ? The first sentence should be a hard-hitting opener. It is a quick introduction, which is accomplishment-oriented and directed at the skills and qualifications needed for the job/industry. The body of the paragraph should provide evidence to back up what you've just claimed.Cite specific jobs/internships/activities/projects and accomplishments associate d with those experiences. Use your resume to come up with some specifics, but NEVER reiterate passages from your resume word for word. Discuss why what you did is to the employer- relate the facts to the job. Strong examples are important! The final sentence is a summary of what you've discussed above. It's a good idea to mention the position title and company name to bring the reader back to the specific job in question. ? FINAL PARAGRAPH: This is a short 2-4 sentences paragraph. You should refer to the enclosed resume, request an interview and let the reader know what will happen next (Contact them within specific period of time unless it is a recruiting program). It is vital that you thank the reader for his/her time and consideration. Cover Letter Rules 1. Address to a specific name and title. If you are uncertain who to address, look in the library reference materials or call the company and ask the receptionist for the appropriate name and title. To gather this information, tel l the receptionist; ââ¬Å"I am sending some important papers to the head of the Department. However, Iââ¬â¢m not sure I have the correct name and address. Could you please tell me to whom I should address these documents? â⬠Writing style should be direct, powerful and error free. Edit to eliminate extraneous words and to check grammar, spelling and punctuation. In addition to stating your purpose, the letter tells the reader how well you communicate. The cover letter should be no more than one page. It should follow good business format. Do not overwhelm the reader with a lengthy cover letter or excessive repetition of the resume content.Keep the letter short and to the point. Three or four paragraphs will suffice: Paragraph 1: State your interest and purpose. Paragraph 2 (& 3): Highlight your resume by stressing what you will do for the employer. Paragraph 3: Request an interview and, if possible, indicate that you will call to discuss potential opportunities. 5. Use appro priate language. Repeat terms that the employer uses, without plagiarizing the job description or quoting from the resume. Avoid jargon and the passive voice. Use action verbs and the active voice. General Education Essay
AUB is committed to offering its students a broad undergraduate liberal arts education that enables them to acquire the analytical skills and habits of life-long learning that they will need to compete successfully in the twenty-first century. The General Education distribution requirements are intended to expose students to a range of intellectual experiences during their time at AUB. We want to give our students the opportunity to make choices and to question and test what they believe are their career goals and their intellectual interests. In addition to courses in their academic majors and the opportunity to take minor concentrations in specific fields, all AUB students must take a minimum of 33-36 credits of general education requirements distributed in the following fields: â⬠¢ â⬠¢ â⬠¢ â⬠¢ â⬠¢ â⬠¢ 3-6 credits in English Communication Skills through English 204 (English 206 in FEA). 3 credits in Arabic Communication Skills (except those formally exempted) 6 credits in Natural Science. 12 credits in Humanities. 6 credits in Social Science. 3 credits in Quantitative Thought. We believe that a student who has chosen to follow a course of study at AUB leading to a degree in a professional field such as engineering should be exposed to the humanities and social sciences. By the same token, a student who plans to major in history should have the opportunity to take science courses and to work in a lab. While being exposed to various fields of knowledge, we also want our students to have the opportunity to experience different modes of learning (lectures, seminars, labs, and independent research projects). Different modes of analysis are designed to enhance studentsââ¬â¢ verbal and interactive skills (seminars), writing and analytic skills (research projects), and hands-on experimental skills (laboratories). These distribution requirements may be met by either required or elective courses. Humanities and Social Sciences courses are divided into two lists: List I and List II within each domain. Students are required to select their courses as follows: â⬠¢ â⬠¢ â⬠¢ â⬠¢ Two Humanities courses from Humanity List I. (FAS Students are required to select CVSP courses) Two Humanities courses from either Humanities lists I and II. One Social Science course from Social Sciences List I. One Social Science course from either Social Sciences lists. 1 In addition, No more than two courses from the studentââ¬â¢s major may fulfill the Humanities requirement, no more than one course from the studentââ¬â¢s major may fulfill the Social Science requirement, and no more than one course from the studentââ¬â¢s major may fulfill the Natural Science requirement. Students who are exempted from Arabic are required to take a Humanity or a Language course instead, unless their Faculty requires otherwise. Students who cannot fulfill the Arabic Communications Skills requirement will be asked to sit for an Arabic Placement Test. According to the result, they may take ARAB201A in replacement to the Arabic Communications Skills requirement. FAS requires that a minimum of six credits in Humanities must be taken from CVSP courses 201-208. FAS Students must complete one course from each of the two CVSP sequences; that is, one course from Sequence I followed by one course from Sequence II.
